Campus Kitchen
In the United States, 40% of the food produced for consumption goes to waste, yet 1 in 6 Americans are Hungry.
Campus Kitchen's mission is to reduce food waste while simultaneously feeding a vulnerable population of seniors in the Athens area through a student powered food rescue and redistribution initiative.
How you can get involved and volunteer:
Campus Kitchen harnesses this potential of excess food in the community--perfectly good food that would otherwise be wasted from local restaurants, fraternities/sororities, and gardens. Student volunteers collect this food, take it into a kitchen space and recreate it into delicious meals, and then deliver it directly to those in need.
Volunteers have an opportunity to critically examine our food system through direct service and community interaction. There are opportunities to be involved in numerous ways depending on an individuals interests varying from nutrition and cooking to gardening and biking.
Beginning in Spring 2011, Campus Kitchen formed a partnership with the Athens Community Council on Aging to help end and prevent senior hunger by serving families in their existing programs that are food insecure. This year, Campus Kitchen has delivered over 1200 pounds of rescued food to 26 families in the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program and families that receive home delivered meals.
Over the summer, Campus Kitchen volunteers harvested vegetable from UGArden to deliver to aid in their partnership with the Athens Community Council on Aging.
Beginning in Fall 2011, Campus Kitchen has also partnered with the Georgia Center and Talmage Terrace to prepare it at their kitchen sites to enable expansion of Campus Kitchen and the amount of food served.
Help us serve Athens Seniors by collecting food, preparing food, delivering food, or helping with promotion and fundraisers!!!
